新加坡建國總理李光耀以鋼鐵般意志，傾注畢生心血，將原本貧困的英國殖民小島，成功打造為亞洲最富裕繁榮國家及全球貿易與金融重鎮。不過，這位政治強人鐵腕治國，箝制民主和言論自由，曾遭西方媒體封為「20世紀最成功的獨裁者之一」。
強勢領導 迅速蛻變
新加坡雖是蕞爾小島，但在李光耀強勢領導下，迅速蛻變為全球經貿強國，國內生產總值（GDP）從1960年的428美元，巨幅成長至2013年的5.5萬美元，漲幅超過100倍，將台灣、南韓和香港等「亞洲四小龍」等亞洲對手，遠遠拋諸腦後。
《華爾街日報》指出，李光耀擘建廉潔、高效率政府，加上友善的經濟政策和社會秩序，成功吸納龐大外資，並吸引全球許多大企業爭相前往新加坡設立總部，「讓新加坡在不到一世代間，從第三世界躍為世界一流國家之林。」
處理貪汙 態度強硬
今年建國50周年的新加坡，被譽為亞洲最適合居住及無貪汙的國家之一。英屬哥倫比亞大學政治科學系教授莫濟表示，新加坡周邊許多鄰國普遍存有貪汙問題，李光耀對貪汙採取強硬態度，使她的政績永垂不朽。
李光耀獨創「新加坡模式」治國之道，標榜經濟發展第一，嚴格管控社會秩序與言論自由。西方媒體批評新加坡沒有新聞自由，政治不民主，反對派長期受打壓及迫害，將李光耀列為「20世紀最成功的獨裁者之一」。1965至1980年，新加坡的GDP成長10倍，可是同一時期，新聞自由機構評鑑新加坡的新聞自由，全球180個國家中，新加坡第153名。
嚴刑峻法 毀譽參半
李光耀早年曾負笈英國劍橋大學攻讀法律，但他主政後卻實施鐵腕統治，倡議「亞洲價值」，對西方民主等制度批評頗多。此外，他也崇尚嚴刑峻法，殺人罪和走私毒品均處以死刑，至於飽受人權團體抨擊的鞭刑，迄今仍無意撤除。
李光耀一生功過，雖有待歷史定斷，不過對新加坡青年艾薩克?蕭說：「他致力擘建一個體制，讓新加坡得以走出建國初始的混沌亂象。對我來說，他有鋼鐵般的意志，成就不容抹煞。」
